INESC R&D Brazil on the path for consolidation
Formalised only seven months ago, INESC R&D Brazil is now on the path for consolidation. The steps formalised with the Brazilian academy and industry are still shy, but as a child takes its first steps, there is enough determination to “shake” the market of the sister country and to boost INESC TEC’s technological activity in Portugal.
CRACS/INESC TEC wins awards at conference
An article written by José Paulo Leal, Vânia Rodrigues and Ricardo Queiroz, researchers at INESC TEC’s Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), was awarded the "Best Paper Award" as part of the 2012 SLATE Conference, held in Braga, Portugal, on 21 and 22 June. As part of the same conference, CRACS researchers Ricardo Rocha and Miguel Areias received the award for best presentation.
HASLab/INESC TEC project receives Google Research Award
A research project developed by INESC TEC’s High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) has received a Google Research Award on 3 July. The project, entitled "Minha”, aims at simplifying and improving the development of software for cloud computing.
CRACS/INESC TEC receives best paper award
An article authored by Pedro Ribeiro and Fernando Silva, both researchers at the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), received the Best Paper Award at the DBSocial 2012 - ACM SIGMOD Workshop on Databases and Social Networks, which took place last May.
INESC TEC develops technology for the maritime sector
INESC TEC signs two protocols, one with CIMAR-LA and another with IPMA. The most important areas in the project are aquaculture, robotics, artificial intelligence and biotechnology.
MammoClass helps diagnose Breast Cancer
Researchers from the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) from the Associate Laboratory, INESC TEC, have built MammoClass, a tool that is able to estimate the malignancy of lumps in mammograms using BIRADS (Breast Imaging and Report Data System).
European decision support project looks to INESC Porto LA
e-POLICY is the name of the European project linked to the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) that will be developed by the Center for Research in Advanced Computer Systems (CRACS) and the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD). e-POLICY will begin in October 2011 and presents a multidisciplinary approach with the aim of supporting political agents in the decision-making process.
LIAAD INESC Porto LA researcher edits book
Carlos Soares, a researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) recently edited the book Data Mining for Business Applications for the IOS Press. The book is about the use of data mining principally in the areas of Economics and Management and it was edited in conjunction with Rayid Ghani (Accenture Technology Labs).
CRACS Researcher receives award at international conference
Ricardo Queirós a researcher from The Center for Research in Advanced Computer Systems (CRACS) and doctorate student at the Faculty of Science, University of Porto (FCUP) received the award for the best poster in the 9th European Conference on e-Learning (ECEL 2010).
LIAAD highlighted in the International Congress of Mathematicians by Indian press
The research work carried out by Alberto Pinto, Vice-Director of the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), was recently highlighted in the online version of the Indian Telegraph, the highest selling newspaper in Eastern India. This report followed the researcher’s presentations at the International Congress of Mathematicians - ICM 2010, which took place in India, a worldwide mathematics congress that takes place every four years and where the "Fields" medals are awarded.
Researcher from UGEI awarded by IBM
João Falcão e Cunha, researcher at the Industrial Management and Engineering Unit (UGEI) and professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), received the “Faculty Awards” from IBM on 2 November 2009.
Researcher from CRACS publishes book
Álvaro Figueira, researcher at the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), published a book on one of the mostly used e-learning systems in the world, currently used by the University of Porto and most of its faculties – the Moodle.
Researchers from LIAAD publish book
Pavel Brazdil and Carlos Soares, researchers at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), are co-authors of a book recently published by Springer, entitled "Metalearning - Applications to Data Mining", written together with Christophe Giraud-Carrier of the Brigham Young University and Ricardo Vilalta of the University of Houston.
LIAAD coordinates project on the Extraction of Knowledge in Distributed Flows of Data
The Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) is currently involved in KDUS – Knowledge Discovery from Ubiquitous Data Streams, a research project financed by FCT for 2009-2012 in the scientific areas of Data Analysis and Knowledge Extraction. The main goal with this project is to study, analyse, develop and evaluate distributed and adaptive learning algorithms, which learn from continuous flows of data generated in dynamic environments.
LIAAD and CRACS organise conferences at the Faculty of Science
The Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) organised the 12th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS09), simultaneously with the 20th International Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory, which took place at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), between 2 and 5 October 2009.
UGEI co-organises special session on metaheuristics
The Industrial Management and Engineering Unit (UGEI) of INESC Porto LA has co-organised, through Bernardo Almada-Lobo, a special session on metaheuristics at the VIII Metaheuristic International Conference (MIC 2009) that took place in Hamburg, Germany, between 13 and 16 July.
Researcher from LIAAD wins PremeIA award
Carlos Soares, researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) was one of the winners of the Merit and Excellence in Artificial Intelligence Award - PremeIA. The winners were presented in a solemn session that took place on 4 July during the 25th Anniversary Session of APPIA (Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence), at the Convent of the Order of Christ, in the city of Tomar.
