On 19 April, INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) promoted a session to present six business projects to Invicta Angels, whose associates are individual venture capitalists.
INESC TEC provides services to startup Grabmark
The lack of tools to support collaborative studies was the motivation to create Grabmark, a platform for students to share and exchange study material. After winning a place in IdeaMove, a competition of business ideas promoted by the TEC Empreende project, the new start-up has received the support of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) at INESC TEC for developing and implementing the business project.
INESC TEC promotes workshops for entrepreneurs
In February 2013, INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) organised the "Design Thinking" training session to encourage the creativity of the participants in problem solving. In March, UITT also initiated a cycle of workshops, which will last until April, dedicated to the problems of growth and development of university spin-offs.
INESC TEC Unit Manager is the new Director of CMU Portugal
João Claro, manager of INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT), a position he shares with Alexandra Xavier, is the new director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal). INESC TEC’s researcher will be taking over João Barros, a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), who had been leading the partnership for the last three years.

INESC TEC researchers at MIT and CMU

INESC TEC organises workshop on entrepreneurship
INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) organised the second edition of the SEEW – Science and Engineering Entrepreneurship Workshop – Leaning by Doing, which took place between 9 and 13 de July. Fibersensing distinguished by COTEC Portugal
Fibersensing, a spin-off company from INESC Porto, was distinguished with an Honourable Mention for the Cotec-Unicer Product Innovation Award, attributed by COTEC, at the 8th National Meeting on Innovation that took place on 28th June at Culturgest.
INESC Porto helps the footwear industry find its feet
“Innovation Dynamics for the Portuguese Footwear Sector” (original title: “Dinâmicas de Inovação do Setor Português do Calçado”) – this is the title of the INESC Porto study commissioned by the Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS). The study concluded that innovation is a fundamental part of the footwear sector’s strategy that when facing market demands allowed it to reinvent itself and become less traditional and more innovative. This distinguishing factor, strengthened by the footwear sector over the years, was supported by INESC Porto and has placed Portugal among the world elite in footwear.
INESC Porto and UPIN promote RDI Management Systems
INESC Porto and the University of Porto Innovation (UPIN) have organised a cycle of workshops that aim to make Portuguese companies aware of the added value of implementing Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Management Systems. In addition to the areas of promotion, learning and discussion this partnership also has a consulting component that evaluates the management of RDI activities in Portuguese companies and supports their implementation.
INESC Porto works with Portucel and MIT to develop Project to manage forest fires
Over the course of three years the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) will develop project FIRE-ENGINE–Flexible Design of Management Systems for Forest Fires. This incentive comes within the framework of MIT Portugal and Portucel Florestal SA and the Engineering Systems Division of MIT will also participate.
INESC Porto Spin-off receives award for best SME 2010
MOG Technologies, the spinoff company of INESC Porto recently received the award for the best Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) for 2010 in Portugal. They were also selected, out of 300,000 SMEs, for the SME Excellence award from the Institute for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation (IAPMEI). This distinction was presented to 1,100 SMEs with the best economic and management performance in 2010 in a ceremony presided over by the Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Development, José Vieira da Silva.

Fibersensing, a spin-off company from INESC Porto, received, on 29 November, an Honourable Mention in the category of Innovation of the Awards CEP-AEP 2009, given in the context of the Entrepreneurial Cooperation Forum Galicia-North of Portugal.

Tomorrow Options, a spin-off from INESC Porto and from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), is the subject of a case study carried out by the UK Trade Investment (UKTI), which will be published soon. This study is the result of Tomorrow Options’ entry in the British market.

INESC Porto’s project Smartwatt is one of the finalists in the Impact Awards organised by Unico, a UK association that represents professionals investing in innovation and knowledge transfer from the universities to the industry.
