Ana Rita Ribeiro, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), was selected to receive a ThorLabs Full Scholarship to participate in the 6th International Graduate Summer School – Biophotonics '13, which will take place between 8 and 15 June in Sweden. Of 70 registrations accepted, the Portuguese researcher was the only one to receive the scholarship that will cover registration and accommodation costs.
New technology will minimise negative impact of coal waste piles
INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) has recently started working on a European project where the aim is to install optical fibre sensors in coal piles in self-combustion resulting from mining. The goal is to remotely monitor the evolution of scenarios associated to combustion processes.
Best physics dissertation in Portugal authored by INESC TEC researcher
Orlando Frazão, researcher at INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), received the Fernando Bragança Gil 2012 Award for the best PhD thesis in Physics written in Portugal between 2009 and 2010. This award is given by the Portuguese Physics Society.
INESC TEC organises international event in the Photonics area
From 27 to 29 June, the Faculty of Science of University of Porto (FCUP) hosted the 10th edition of the Symposium on Enabling Optical Networks and sensors (SEONs), which was organised by INESC TEC. As part of this symposium, the Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics (SPOF) organised, in collaboration with INESC TEC and the IT-Aveiro, the first Summer School on Recent Advances in Optics and Photonics.
INESC TEC co-organises events on Optics and Photonics
The Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics is organising, in collaboration with INESC TEC and IT-Aveiro, the first Summer School on Recent Advances in Optics and Photonics, to be held between 27 and 29 June at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP). As part of this event, INESC TEC is also organising the 10th edition of the Symposium on Enabling Optical Networks and Sensors (SEONS), which takes place on 27 June.
INESC TEC sensors identify DNA in wines
INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) has recently started an innovative project in the biosensors area , in collaboration with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), the National Institute of Biological Resources (INRB) and SOGRAPE, LDA (Sociedade Agrícola S. Mateus), where the aim is to develop an optical biosensor to detect DNA hybridisation processes which can be used in wine traceability.
INESC TEC develops wireless swimming costume to monitor swimmers
INESC TEC, in partnership with the University of Minho and the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto, have developed training equipment that allows competitive coaches and swimmers to measure their biometric parameters and performance to improve their knowledge and gain better results.
INESC TEC researcher wins Gulbenkian Prize
Cláudia Ferreirinha from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC TEC was one of the researchers awarded the Prize for Encouraging Research from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

INESC Porto Researchers edit special issue of SENSORS magazine
Researchers Orlando Frazão and Pedro Jorge from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) have been invited to edit a special issue of the magazine SENSORS by MDPI - Molecular Diversity Preservation International. The issue will be dedicated to Portugal and will be launched in 2011.
INESC Porto develops project to detect harmful agents on the environment
The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is working on a new exchange project between Portugal and Brazil – AMBISENSE, which will make it possible to timely detect the existence of harmful agents on the environment.
INESC Porto develops environmental monitoring system for the Amazon region
The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is currently developing a prototype to sense chemical parameters within the project “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”. The project will be applied in the Amazon region, more specifically in the city of Belém, in Pará, where the rivers Guamá and Igarapé Sapocajuba present concerning pollution levels.
INESC Porto researcher coordinates team of students in ESA experiment
Carla Carmelo Rosa, researcher at INESC Porto’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) and professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), was the supervisor of a project developed by a team of students from FCUP’s Physics Department. The team, called “Physics Addicted”, was invited to launch an experiment in microgravity, in the context of the call for the programme “Fly your thesis” of the European Space Agency (ESA).
INESC Porto participates in several COST Action meetings and international conferences
The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) has been participating in several COST Action meetings (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) and in international conferences in order to promote the research work carried out in the Unit, as well as new partnerships. The COST Action constitutes an intergovernmental framework for European cooperation in science and technology that helps reduce the fragmentation of investments used in research at a European level, promoting its dissemination around the world.
INESC Porto supports OECD in the development of complex sensing networks
José Luís Santos, coordinator of the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), was invited to participate in the “OECD Experts Conference on Using Sensor-Based Networks to Address Global Issues: Policy Opportunities and Challenges”, organized by OECD on 8 and 9 June.

INESC Porto participates in IEEE Sensors 2008 Conference
Researchers from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), José Manuel Baptista, Filipe Magalhães, Orlando Frazão and Paulo Caldas, have recently participated in IEEE Sensors 2008 – the 7th IEEE Conference on Sensors (http://www.ieee-sensors2008.org/). Organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), this event took place from 26 to 29 October, in Lecce, Italy.
