João Peças Lopes: «There is no technology for Supergrids»
The SuperGrid «is still a dream». This was how João Peças Lopes from INESC Porto opened the debate on «The Direction for the PAN European Network», following a session of presentations in which the need for a flexible grid was one of the most significant observations.
«There is no technology for supergrids; therefore, we could create a seriously fragile system. For example, we are not aware of the challenge of repairing a grid of this type. It is very ambitious», explained the specialist from Northern Portugal.
Jorge Esteves, from ERSE, admitted that the supergrid is still at the research stage while the smartgrid is already at the implementation stage.
Alberto Carbajo Rosa, the General Director of operations at REE (the Spanish Electricity Grid) admitted that the task is not easy, but it is «inevitable», bearing in mind the large quantity of renewable energy that will shortly generate electricity and the fact that the existing grid does not have the capacity to manage this. «In Spain, we are now beginning testing the first continuous power cable in the Balearic Islands and this could provide us with the know-how that will form the foundations for a Supergrid», stated the Spanish General Director.
