On 24 April, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) organised the second edition of the "UTM Open Day". The aim with this event is to promote the Unit’s activity internally and externally and to disseminate preliminary research results.
New PhD holder at UTM
Hélder Castro, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), has concluded his PhD on 5 April, and was approved with honours.
UTM publishes three papers in international journals
Researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) have recently published three papers in international journals in the areas of optical fibres, optical properties of biological tissue and breast cancer.
INESC TEC technology in the skies
The European project DAPHNE, in the area of optical fibre communication systems for civil aircraft, which involved INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), has reached a conclusion in February.
INESC TEC concludes project in the music area
INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has concluded in March the project MIReS - Music Information ReSearch. The aim with this project was to create a roadmap for research on Music Information Retrieval (MIR).
INESC TEC organises workshop on information security
On 28 February, INESC TEC organised the workshop “New Paradigms and Challenges for Information Security”. The goal was to disseminate the results obtained by the Associate Laboratory in terms of research on information security, a theme that involves over 80 researchers from several Units. The aim with this session was also to promote partnerships with companies interested in developing projects in this area.
INESC TEC tests broadband radio solution for remote locations
INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently tested a solution that provides two-way broadband access based on long-range point-to-point WiFi connections. The field tests were conducted within an R&D contract with Portuguese company Sinuta SA as part of project WISAT - Development of passive devices for both VSAT and MIMO PtP bridging applications.
INESC TEC develops solution to manage road networks
INESC TEC has recently started working on project SARA – System to Manage Assets in Road Networks, a joint research initiative that benefits from the expertise of two INESC TEC Units – the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) and the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM). The aim is to create an innovative solution to efficiently manage road network assets.
INESC TEC researchers publish paper in international journal
João Canas Ferreira and Nuno Paulino, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), have recently published a paper on reconfigurable processing unit. João Cardoso, also a researcher at INESC TEC, and João Bispo from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), also co-wrote the paper.
UTM/INESC TEC group celebrates 100th meeting
On 11 March, the Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence (VCMI) group, which is part of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), celebrated their 100th meeting. The group has 13 members conducting research on visual computing and artificial intelligence.

INESC TEC joins Steering Committee of the ns3 consortium
In February, INESC TEC joined the Steering Committee of the ns3 consortium, a collection of organisations cooperating to support and develop the ns-3 software. This is a simulator for communication networks and Internet systems that support teaching and research activities in these areas.
INESC TEC demonstrates GPS over optical fibre as part of European project
On 23 January, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) was in Bristol, UK, to participate in a meeting with the partners of European project DAPHNE, a project about optical fibre communication systems for civil aircrafts.
INESC TEC researchers awarded by FEUP
Eight INESC TEC researchers were awarded by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), as part of the celebrations of the Faculty Day, which took place on 16 January. José Ruela, former manager of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) was also honoured at the ceremony.
Project by UTM highlighted at CMU Portugal symposium
The project Self-PVP: Self-Organizing Power Management for Photo-Voltaic Power Plants, which is being developed at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) as part of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal (CMU Portugal) Program, was featured at the inaugural symposium of the second stage of CMU Portugal, "Carnegie Mellon Portugal: An Entrepreneurial University-Industry Ecosystem in ICT", which took place on 21 January in Lisbon.
INESC TEC organises seminar on wireless sensor networks
On 25 January, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) organised the seminar “Wireless Sensor Networks”. The aim was to identify and develop skills and synergies that can help converge individual efforts to benefit the Unit as a whole, and perfect the Unit’s critical mass, using that potential to provide complete solutions for a sustainable reality.
Three FCT projects approved at UTM
Three project applications by INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) have recently been approved by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the areas of data transmission, localisation based on sensors and health.
WiFi solution by INESC TEC tested in European project
The WiFIX, a wireless mesh network solution developed by researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), will be implemented and tested as part of the European project CONFINE (Community Networks Testbed for the Future Internet). The aim with this project is to create a large-scale testbed called Community-Lab to support experimental research on wireless networks.

INESC TEC collaborates with Japanese Honda to create robot with "super-hearing"
Imagine that the TV is on and the kids are playing in certain room. To add to the noise caused by these two situations, the doorbell rings. Can this sound be detected by a robot? A group of researchers responsible for creating the HEARBO robot, among which is João Oliveira of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), ensures that the answer is yes.
