INESC TEC researchers improve productivity in the Douro region
Augustin Olivier, manager at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and advisor to the Board, and António Gaspar, manager at the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) participated, on May 4, in another meeting of the A2B sessions promoted by the University of Porto (U. Porto). The purpose of this meeting was to find solutions to winemaking practices that will make the Douro region more productive and sustainable.
Other than INESC TEC, a group of researchers from the U.Porto and Associate Institutes were also present at this meeting. These members had the opportunity to visit the Douro Wine producing regions and companies which are part of the Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Viticultura Duriense - ADVID (the Association for the Development of Wine Production in the Douro Region). During the meeting, researchers presented their competences and projects that can help improve production and sustainability of the Douro region.
Some of the issues covered by the team of researchers included cartography, hydrography, geotechnical engineering, economics, vineyard monitoring, culture, mechanical or information systems. It is important to highlight that information systems is one of INESC TEC’s areas of expertise.
In particular, researchers at INESC TEC have already developed projects in this area, including the tourism portal Douro Valley, the starndardisation of vineyard plots and the use of classification management for vineyard plots for the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto – IVDP (the Port and Douro Wine Institute).
In addition to Augustin Olivier and António Gaspar, INESC TEC was also represented by José António Sarsfield Cabral from the Unit of Management and Industrial Engineering (UGEI) and Germano Veiga from the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS).
