Technology: A Surveillance Robot that detects intruders, fires and floods on its rounds

A robot that detects intruders, dangerously high temperatures and floods could soon be patrolling large scale buildings, such as warehouses or shopping centres thanks to a project developed by INESC TEC.

“The surveillance robot carries a range of sensors to identify smoke, gas, carbon monoxide, temperature and water on the floor. It patrols just like a security guard”, states one of the coordinators of the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit at INESC TEC.

António Paulo Moreira explained that the robot “has both surveillance cameras and a thermal camera that measures temperature and detects body heat”. It can also detect fires, for example if a machine overheats and it uses images where the colour reflects the temperature.
